How to Freeze Bananas Like A Pro

This post seems mundane and a little silly.  “Freeze bananas? Why would I need instructions on how to do that?”  Well, I think so too.  Except that this trick I picked up while working in a coffee shop has opened me up to the beautiful, tantalizing world of smoothies.  You can use fresh fruit in a smoothie, but if you use a frozen banana it will turn it into a creamy, dreamy delight.  Frozen banana pieces are also good for when you are craving a sweet dessert.  Put some in a bowl with greek yogurt, drizzle with honey or agave, and add a little shredded coconut!  Voila!  Healthy dessert!

The key to freezing anything really, is to keep all the little pieces separate until they are frozen ALL the way through.  This way they won’t stick together and you can get as many as you like, whenever you please.

How to Freeze Bananas Like a Pro

  • Peel your bananas and line them all up together so they are facing the same direction, like little nesting dolls.
  • Slice into 1-1 1/2″ slices (you can cut like 10 bananas at a time!)
  • spread slices out onto a non-stick baking sheet, so they are not touching
  • If you have more than one tray, just put wax paper on top and stack the trays!
  • Once they are frozen, you can put them in a bag and save until you need them.

And there you have it.  Common sense?  Maybe.  But I believe that this little trick has greatly improved my standard of living.  Give it a try!  Invent a smoothie!  Go bananas!

Other uses for frozen bananas:

Use for banana bread, pancakes, vegan cookies, topping for ice cream or frozen yogurt, dip them in nutella and roll them in crushed nuts, the possibilities are endless!

Honeydew Banana Basil Smoothie

I remember my dad used to make these awesome honeydew mint smoothies.  Cool and refreshing, they are the perfect summer breakfast/drink/snack!  I don’t have any mint right now, but we got a sweet honeydew from our CSA last week that has been sitting around, feeling lonely and unappreciated.  Don’t worry, little honeydew!  Smoothie to the rescue!  This recipe turned out sweet and light, just like I remembered.  I highly recommend trying mint instead of basil, or if you’re feeling extra frisky, try both!  I added yogurt for protein and a banana to make it thicker.

Honeydew Banana Basil Smoothie

Time: 10 minutes

Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups honeydew, chopped
  • 1/2 cup low fat, plain yogurt
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 banana
  • 5 ice cubes
  • bunch of basil or mint leaves (I only used about 6 but I could’ve done with more)

Put ingredients in blender.  Blend away!  Enjoy!
